V.R.Nayanar

Kunhimangalam is not only a place of art and beauty but also a land of politicians. Several prominent personalities took vigorous participation in the freedom struggle. The most outstanding and esteemed personality among the freedom fighters is Mr. V.R.Nayanar, B.A. graduate who gave up his life for the unification and upliftment of the Harijans. His selfless and tireless efforts for the well-being of his fellowmen grabbed place in the hearts of the people.Nayanar the eldest son of Mr.Rairu Nambiar and Smt. Kalyani Amma was born in 1900. During his period, cruel epidemic, poverty and merciless famine was gulping down human life. In addition to it Malabar commotion dragged people into utter depression. People especially of lower strata found themselves wedged in incessant wretchedness. They experienced the zenith of torment and pangs due to lack of food, shelter & medical support to fight the contagious diseases. The sufferings of the poor people stirred his heart and provoked him to pull them out of the mire of despair. He sacrificed all the pleasures and luxuries of worldly life and resolved to serve the downtrodden. He served the urchins and orphans as a guardian and provided more congenial shelters to them. He traveled around the country amassing food, clothing and medicines and distributed them to the poor and needy ones.

Similarly during 1943-1944, when fatal cholera started its havoc, the consequence was massive destruction of human life and spread clouds of misery around. At such troubled hours advanced medical treatment was also not available. During this critical state, Nayanar appeared as an angel to extend solace to the disheartened lives. He reached every door of the victims of epidemic and offered free medical treatment. Thus he treated and rescued each ailing inmates from deathly stage, neglecting his own life and took all probable measures to pin down this disease. He was like a candle burning self and lightening others. His humanitarian activities during the communal unrest and desolation made him immortal. He deserves full fledged tribute for his relentless efforts for communal harmony and welfare. He shone like a Pole star for his laudable and immaculate activity in social field and still venerated by the inhabitants of this state. Later he had also established orphanages in Kozhikode, Ponnani, Dharmadam and Payangadi (Pazhayangadi) and repatriated orphans.
